The NZQA unit standards required for the Certificate of Approval (CoA) are included in this short course. CoA is the required qualification to work in the security industry.
The CoA is issued by the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA), the Unit Standards involved are:
- 27360 – Describe conflict management in a security context (theory)
- 27361 – Manage conflict situations in a security context (Practical)
- 27364 – Demonstrate knowledge of the security industry in the pre-employment context (Introduction to the Security Industry)
(If you have completed a New Zealand National Certificate in Security at Level 2 or higher since 2009, you may not need unit standard 27364.)
Our CoA training and assessment covers the knowledge and skills you need to achieve these standards.
Mode of Delivery
This course is delivered through blended learning, a mixture of face-to-face workshops and online learning. You will learn through workshops, independent study using workplace documents, study guides, online resources and doing on-job training.
Unit Standards 27360 and 27364 are delivered either face-to-face or online, while Unit Standard 27361 is delivered face-to-face only.
Employment Pathway
Learners that have completed this programme can work in the security industry.
You can apply for the CoA with the PSPLA when you:
- Have completed these unit standards
- Over 18 years of age
- Meet the PSPLA’s requirements

Entry Requirements
To enrol in this programme, a trainee must be:
- Currently working or intends to work in a security job
- A citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand or an Australian Citizen or a permanent resident residing in New Zealand
- Able to speak and understand English
- Admission can be on a case by case basis at the discretion of the Director of Stratcom Security
